If you’ve been reading my work here on ThrottleHolic (and elsewhere), you’d have noticed something by now: I venerate the Ancel AD410 code reader. I also recommend it widely for anyone looking for a reliable code reader that won’t disappoint them.
The important first question? Why I chose the Ancel AD410 in the first place.
Further, if you understand code readers (and know what the AD410 offers), you may wonder further: “Throttle, what’s up with the Ancel AD410? Did Ancel pay you to MASSIVELY promote it?“
Naa!
I wasn’t paid a dime to promote the Ancel AD410, and I’ve never collaborated with Ancel on the AD410. Further, I bought the AD410 with my own money, many years ago – and I paid CASH.
That clarified, the real wonder begins. The little glove box code reader only scans engines and displays emission codes, so what’s very special about it that keeps me ranting, over the years, in an unpaid capacity?
There are many reasons for this, with the umbrella one being that it truly is an awesome code reader: the type you don’t see every day.
Breaking this down, here are 11 reasons why the Ancel AD410 has remained my code reader of choice, through the years, car after car, all through the seasons.
First things first: here’s the direct link to the Ancel AD410 on Amazon and, importantly, my review of the little bad boy.
So, why a code reader (in the first place)?

Why a Code Reader?
A code reader is a computer, usually small, capable of reading the meaning behind a Check Engine Light (CEL). Distinguished from a professional OBD II scanner, a code reader is generally portable, and usually only capable of scanning engine and emissions-related codes.
Because of this reality, a code reader is usually cheap and portable enough to carry in the vehicle for on-the-road diagnosis. In this ‘mobile’ capacity, a portable code reader generally lives in and operates from the glovebox of a vehicle.
For modern vehicles, troubleshooting and repairs happen only with the aid of at least a code reader – if you’re interested in getting it right from the beginning.
I have reviewed the best OBD II code readers money can buy at the moment. If you’re interested in finding worthy alternatives to the Ancel AD410, especially as an auto DIY mechanic, here’s the post.
So, why did I choose the Ancel AD410?
Why I Chose the Ancel AD410: 11 Reasons
I chose the Ancel AD410 for a plethora of reasons. Some of these reasons may resonate with you better than others. However, after more than half a decade with the code reader, there isn’t a moment I take it out and don’t smile.
It’s without question one of my best purchases since I ventured into the exciting world of vehicle repair.
So, here’s why I chose the Ancel AD410 code reader.
1. It’s Affordable
Let’s be honest and completely sincere: if you aren’t a millionaire, great chances are that you still worry about prices and sometimes, decide in favor of something (or against it) wholly (or partly) because of its price.
The fair price the unit retailed for (it was under $30 at the time of purchase) made the deal a good one (and purchasing it easy). My argument was simple and to the point: it’s either hit or miss – and I was ready to forgo the money and move on, should the unit prove not to be worthy of my time (and efforts).
It turned out, it was – and the rest, they say, is history.
Price (favorable pricing that is), remains the number one reason why I opted for the unit, back in the day. Today, this remains a very potent reason to consider the 410, especially if you’re just starting out or are on a budget.
2. Well Made, Sturdy Construction
Granted, this wasn’t immediately obvious online when I first researched and bought the Ancel AD410 on AliExpress (yes, AliExpress, NOT Amazon).
However, I couldn’t miss it when the order landed at my front door, and I began using the code reader to tackle vehicle issues that presented themselves.
By and large, the only reason, perhaps, which has made me stick to the Ancel AD410 as my glove box code reader of choice is simply because it’s rugged enough for the task of being a glove box code reader and serving on the go.
3. Works Across All Makes & Models
When I got the Innova 5610, I was ecstatic! A few weeks with it and I easily named it the best subscription-free pro scanner for the bucks.
However, there’s something that recently pissed me off with the unit: I wanted to scan a Peugeot 206 with the TU5 engine, and to my shock, I met a brick wall…that was when I recalled that the unit was designed for vehicles meant for the North American market (only).
I was frustrated – but luckily, I have a ton of other OBD II scanners/code readers and easily switched to another, designed for such a task.
Guess the option I turned to? It was to my trusty, little Ancel AD410!
And, minus the fact that the little code reader only reads engine and emissions codes, it handles every other thing pretty well; so well has it done, as a matter of fact, that I’ve not been stuck, since I started using it.
As far as basic engine and emissions code reading go, the little Ancel will deliver, with an unfailing reliability, at least 99% of the time (which is impressive enough, looked at closely).
4. Fits Perfectly In the Glove Box
All the features of the Ancel AD410 mentioned before now would perfectly go to waste (at least, for me) if not for the singular fact that the unit very portably fits into the glove box; any glove box, for that matter.
Compared to the extra-large Konnwei KW850, this unit is one that is truly ‘mobile’ and, in that capacity, perfect for the road.
Because of the awesome size of the AD410, it also lives in the glove box without any challenges or stress, making friends with the vehicle’s manual or anything else that also lives there (and calls the little space, ‘home’).
5. Ergonomic (To Perfection)
The numerous reasons why I chose the Ancel AD410 as my code reader of choice don’t stop with the fact that it sits perfectly in the glove box; part of the reasons is that it also sits perfectly in the hands when in use.
Now, because the code reader is suited for life on the move (and motoring generally), it naturally finds itself in use all the time. This use remains fun moments, however, because of how well it aligns in the hands.
In the hands of a user, the code reader remains ‘super fluid’ and is designed to remain that way, irrespective of how one uses it. It truly is a code reader unlike many other options today, which often leave much to be desired when used.
6. Superior Display
I’ve used a lot of code readers and OBD II scanners during my time as an auto DIY mechanic. However, if there’s one flaw I see all the time, across makes and models, it’s the poor displays, incapable of holding their own, in the face of the sun.
There have been moments when I wanted to take a quick photo of an error code or make a video of the process. However, because of the intense glare from the screen, I get stuck, unsure of how best to proceed.
Thanks to the 2.4-inch TFT true-color LCD on the Ancel AD410, I’ve NEVER had sun glare challenges with it: all I need to do, usually, is to plug the code reader into any OBD II port, and irrespective of the sun’s intensity (or glare), I get what I want without much fuss (or drama).
This singular reality has made me always defer to the code reader when I want to carry out any auto DIY task, knowing that, irrespective of how the day looks, I’ll be able to (easily) take photos or shoot (if the need arises).
7. Fast Operation
I’m a very patient man; however, when it comes to diagnosing vehicle faults, I tend to lose patience quickly. Why keep fumbling around, wasting time, when your vehicle isn’t running properly?
Unfortunately, for many scanners and code readers, you must wait for them to do their thing, majestically. The worst part of it is when you’re dealing with Bluetooth-powered code readers that must somehow connect to an account, then pair up to your phone!
Dang! Who has that time?!
In a few seconds, right after plugging the Ancel AD410 in, I’m in business and know exactly what’s wrong with my vehicle.
If I can get things done with speed and precision, why wait?
8. Super Durable
Usually, I’m super careful with my things; this is why I easily get 10 (or more) years out of any item that comes to me. If I don’t get that much, usually, the problem lies with the item (and not with me).
However, I’ve noticed (with frequent use) that the Ancel AD410 is made differently, when it comes to reliability: the unit has been unintentionally tested several times and has always come out clean, despite all the drops and falls it has been made to face.
Now, what/how do you tag something that should be long broken but which curiously continues to defy every law (of Physics) you’ve known and understand?
The surprising fact? Despite all the drops and hard life in the glove box that the Ancel AD410 lives in, it still comes out as neat as the day I first bought it.
If this isn’t some badass durability, I don’t know what else it is.
9. Sensible Key Spacing
Another feature I’ve come to love and thoroughly enjoy on my code reader is the fact that the keys are few (just 5), spaced right, and very importantly, work intuitively.
With a few keys, I know what to expect from a keystroke, even when I depress a key while driving (for instance). The right spacing ensures that I don’t accidentally depress another key when I mean something else. Finally, their intuitive operation sees to it that I don’t put energy into figuring out how the unit operates – it just works, as it should.
Sometimes, I simply hold the unit in my hands, smile, and wonder at the genius behind it. If only everything I come across (or use) is made with such level of thoughtfulness!
10. Advanced Features for the Price Point
Many code readers, especially the cheaper variants, achieve their affordable price status by cutting out on features and making the unit as basic as possible. This hasn’t been my experience using this little code reader from the stables of Ancel.
For instance, many code readers at this price point don’t render live data graphically, which is a huge negative, especially if you’re interested in looking at things objectively or comparing values.
That isn’t all: the AD410 also brilliantly explains codes found, even for the ‘uninitiated’. This is very handy for DIYers, especially for those moments when uncharted territory is entered.
As a matter of fact, only the NT301 provides a code reading system that is superior to the AD410. But then, it’s more expensive, larger, and generally inferior to the AD410 in more ways than one.
11. Superior Lightweight Reality
There’s a good and valid reason I don’t do SUVs, unless it’s absolutely necessary. Why carry all the bulk around when you can achieve what you want without expending all the weight (and the attendant consequences)?
This logic is what I’ve carried over to other things I love and are interested in: why bother with heft when you can get your code readers to work and perform their tasks under the 1-pound weight limit?
Sometimes, I forget that I’m actively holding the Ancel AD410 in my hand: that’s how lightweight the unit is!
So, What’s the Point?
The point of this article today is simple: badass products are still being made, day in, day out – you only need to know where to look or who to ask.
In this case, the Ancel AD410 remains such a product, and yours faithfully, Throttle, is such an authority.
Now, here’s the deal: if you’re looking for an excellent glove box code reader that will stand the test of time, the Ancel AD410, available on Amazon, is your best bet.
Simple, affordable, easy to use, reliable, ultra durable, and fast…for a code reader, it honestly doesn’t get better than this!
